It’s the first thing almost every new lash client asks me: “How long will these actually last?” The honest answer is that a full set of eyelash extensions looks its best for about three weeks, and with good care and regular fills you can keep a full, fluffy look indefinitely. Here’s what affects that, and how to get the most out of every set.

Why extensions don’t last forever (and why that’s normal)

Each extension is bonded to one of your own natural lashes, not to your skin. Your natural lashes grow and shed in a cycle, and a few fall out every day. When a natural lash sheds, its extension goes with it. That’s why, after two to three weeks, your set starts to look thinner even if every bond held perfectly. Nothing went wrong; your lashes are just doing what lashes do.

How often should you get a fill?

Most clients come back for a fill every three to three and a half weeks. A fill replaces the lashes that have shed and the ones that have grown out too far, so your set looks full again without starting from scratch. If you wait much longer than four weeks, there usually isn’t enough left to fill, and you’ll need a new full set instead.

5 things that make your lashes last longer

  • Keep them dry for the first 24 hours. The adhesive needs time to fully set, so skip steam, saunas, sweaty workouts and long showers on day one.
  • Skip oil near your eyes. Oil-based cleansers, makeup removers and heavy eye creams break down the bond. Look for oil-free formulas.
  • Clean them, don’t avoid them. It’s tempting to never touch your lashes, but buildup of makeup and natural oils weakens the bond. Gently wash them a few times a week with a lash-safe cleanser.
  • Brush them every morning. A clean spoolie keeps them separated and fluffy, and helps you notice any twisted lashes early.
  • Hands off. Rubbing your eyes, pulling at lashes and sleeping face-down all shorten their life. Never pull an extension off; it can take your natural lash with it.

Classic or Russian Volume: does it change how long they last?

Both styles follow the same natural shedding cycle, so the fill schedule is similar. The difference is the look: classic places one extension on each natural lash for a polished, natural result, while Russian Volume uses fans of ultra-fine lashes for a fuller, more dramatic look. Volume sets often still look full a little longer between fills simply because there’s more density to start with. During your appointment, we’ll talk through which style fits your natural lashes and your lifestyle.
